Sun web site reports over 100,000 downloads of Star Office in less than 100 hours. I suspect that the numbers mean that Sun managed to pique curiosity about an application that's been around for a long time. Not much else. As we learned from Microsoft, even the numbers themselves might be misleading. Are they counting connections to the server or completed downloads? (Microsoft once counted the connections for an IE download even when the user did not complete the long download.) [And the other question: How many of those downloads from Sun went to addresses called tide[x].microsoft.com? <g> ] I downloaded StarOffice and installed it. Why not? It took me 15 minutes to download and 15 to install, so it was worth the half-hour to satisfy curiosity about the application. The point of the past few messages is that there is little about the application at this point in its development that makes it a compelling alternative to Microsoft Office. Maybe Sun can change that, but it will take more than just getting it installed on a machine.

JO: If one already owns MS Office why are they going to download something which is at best a me too product that because of its price or lack thereof has no chance of being supported. Most, like RTev, are downloading it for curiosity sake. This is not a serious threat to MSFT as there is no synergy to be effected by distributing this stand alone copy cat suite. In fact it is a blunder in the face of the present legal status quo or an admission that things at court have gone south for SUNW,AOL,DOJ et al which should be no surprise to those rational thinkers on this board.
