Mqurice, I am currently designing a radio shield that will protect me from DoCoMo-toting shrieking teens, so no need to worry.

"What do you think it would take to start the Japanese teen technolust shift going from NTT to cdmaOne?"

Well, it's sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy: once the really cool ones have it, they'll ALL have to have it. But how to enlist the hypercool ones? Price, for sure; it's a nobrainer for them to choose a 1,000 yen DoCoMo handset over the 15,000 yen SONY beaut that I have. But I also think that quality will at some point enter the picture; sure, the others are cheap/free, but *mine* doesn't cut you off as you enter the underground mall below Shinjuku station. *Mine* sounds better than NTT analog, let alone DoCoMo. Static-y, oft-cut-off conversations will begin to accrue negative cachet, I predict, and the supercool will want superquality, price be damned. Look out when that happens!

"Is there any shortage of cdmaOne handsets in Japan or can you just get any one you want at any shop?"

No shortage whatsoever. They're everywhere.

>> I suppose the first customers are those wealthy businessmen who can afford $125 and as they all supplied, the price will work its way down to the technolust teens.

Mqurice, a friend and I were charged that much for lunch in the Ginza dsitrict (2 orders of toro sushi, an oki Saporo draft beer, and some saki). I paid $6.00 for a dainty little cup of coffee at the Century Plaza. The Japanese have a strong economy, or at least they're living that way. I don't think $125 will hold back the fashion and tech conscious young people of Japan.

Wasn't Mae West who said "Is that a cell phone in your pocket or are glad to see me?"
