Lernout & Hauspie (LHSP; option root XQL - 32-9/16) - In 'N Out LHSP provides speech and language products and services. For the past month-and-a-half, the stock has been confined in a trading range between the 30 and 34 levels. This morning, the equity gapped higher on the open without any news to account for the rise. In late-morning trading, LHSP is up over one percent. In addition, today's advance has the stock testing support at its 20-day moving average. Option activity is rather heavy today, as it appears that a 1,000-contract spread was opened between the in-the-money September 30 call and the out-of-the-money September 30 put. In addition, another 1,000-contract spread was opened between the out-of-the-money March 40 call and the in-the-money March 40 put. These are some of the most active call and put contracts on the AMEX. Motorola (MOT - 98-13/16) - 80-Call Motor MOT shares began their climb from about the 73 level in March and continued until early July, when they tapped out near the century mark. Taking a breather, the security dipped back near 87, home of its 20-week moving average at the time, and formed a range the carried MOT between 87 and 93 for about a month-and-a-half. Feeling rested, the shares have jumped out of this trading range today, shooting up three percent. In options action on Friday, traders added almost 3,200 contracts to the open interest on the September 95 call. Notable were several large block trades of 1,500,1,500, and 1,000 contracts that crossed the tape within 15 minutes of each other, all between the bid and ask prices. In intraday activity today, the in-the-money October 80 call has been busy on volume of 1,769 contracts. Newbridge Networks (NN - 27-1/4) - A New Time For Church NN has been a volatile stock this year, whipped by announcements of earnings shortfalls and expense problems in the first half of the year. Even with the volatility, the shares have held support near the 24-1/2 level. On August 25, the company made a bid for two Internet-based equipment vendors, TimeStep Corp. and Northchurch Communications, as part of its long-awaited strategy to service the explosive growth of data traffic over the Internet. The purchase is payable in cash over two years. On Friday, options traders were placing large spread trades between the September 25 call and the October 25 call, which each saw volume of over 3,600 contracts. Open interest at the front-month strike decreased by 400 contracts, while 3,600 contracts were added at the back-month strike. NN is unchanged in midday action.
