Celgene leased the rights from someone (Entremed?). There is hope it works on brain cancer, and Kerry took it. Better that than dying. It didn't cure her.

Thalidomide's patent has expired, but Celgene Corporation submitted it for approval by the FDA for treatment of leprosy, and it has been approved. There are many other prospective uses -- AIDS, etc.
