ed,

Relax. Do you really want to know why Sun bought Star Office.

There are very few good UNIX based Office Applications - writing docs or making spreadsheets is not what UNIX is for.

However in business you need Office Applications, the world has decided Office is the standard. Scott McNealy can't very well buy PC's, NT and MSOffice and roll it out across Sun's workers. So for a one time fee he bought the source to an Office clone that he can run on his current (UNIX) desktops throughout the company.

As a bonus he can put the source on the net to tweak BillG's nose.

What do you think a site license for MSOffice costs a company the size of Sun? I'll bet that 25 million is really cheap over the long run.

So relax, ED. You're jousting at windmills.
