Carl,

Imagine having to do a rambus desing using Orcad, for instance
No one is going to be (successfully) designing DDR with Orcad either.

But that running close to the edge is not accompanied by significant performance improvements.
Well, we could argue this point for a long time. I believe there will be a substantial performance increase, particularly as processor speeds increase. But let me point out that it is the perception of performance that is important. Intel made a big deal with MMX, causing a transition of microprocessor generations. The marketing success far outweighed the performance increase. Between Intel, Dell and others, Rambus will be marketed so heavily that people will feel if they are impaired if they don't have a Rambus machine.

a big (560-pin) FBGA (from Xilinx) had a via under each pin
These BGAs certainly make things ugly. They need to have pin escapes to get signals out. But the outer two rows can be reached without a pin escape. When the pinout diagram for an 820 becomes public, I suspect we will find that the RDRam signals are on the outer 2 rows on one side, allowing their access without any vias or pin escapes.

"I am not predicting that Dell will not be able to build a rambus machine. I never predicted that Samsung would be unable to build a
rambus chip, for that matter, just that it is a lot more trouble than SDRAM or DDR. "

I may remind you that it is also "more trouble" to build a 4 bed / 4 bath bungalow with air and central heating, than it is a garden shed.

But nevertheless (successful) builders tend to build more bungalows
than garden sheds. The reason is called is called demand, which in turn is created by marketing
