WGAT, does anyone follow this? I know it's been on watchlists. It's on the UPS list, up over 2 points and showed up on so many of my scans this weekend it really caught my attention. WorldGate Receives Patent for Ultra Thin-Client Computing Architecture; Technology Key for Using Existing Cable Plant for Delivering Internet Access Through the TV BusinessWire, Tuesday, September 07, 1999 at 08:00 TREVOSE, Penn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 7, 1999--WorldGate Communications, Inc (NASDAQ:WGAT) announced today that all 60 claims of the Company's patent application for its Ultra Thin-Client(SM) architecture have been allowed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This patent application relates to a system and method for accessing an information source without the need for a personal computer, and more importantly to the access of such information source through the use of existing television distribution systems. WorldGate is the first and only company to commercially deploy low cost, high-speed access to the Internet creating two-way interactive TV on analog and digital cable television infrastructure. This is the second set of patent claims the Company has been awarded in the last six months. The new patent covers the aspect of WorldGate's technology that enables cable operators to provide Internet access through the television set at very low cost to the consumer by using standard set-top cable converters. "The Ultra Thin-Client architecture minimizes the need for expensive CPU and memory to be located in the home," said Hal Krisbergh, Chairman and CEO of WorldGate. "Placing these components centrally at the cable headend eliminates the need for the cable customer to own a PC or purchase any additional standalone set-top box to have Internet and an array of interactive services through their television set. By allowing for significantly more resources to be economically deployed in the headend, the Ultra Thin-Client architecture enables increased functionality such as Java applications and video and audio streaming, while freeing up the resources of the set-top in the home for other applications and services, a strong plus for cable operators." As a result, WorldGate is able to overcome many of the historical barriers to the successful use of the cable television infrastructure to deliver full Internet and e-mail access to the home. "The issue of obsolescence also becomes moot if the lion's share of the computing power of the service is located outside the home," said Hal Krisbergh. "There is no need to replace the box as software and hardware improvements occur, the operator simply upgrades the central computing equipment and software at the headend without having to roll a truck or interrupt the subscriber's use of the service. Such upgrades are virtually transparent to the subscriber, and enormously more cost efficient for the cable operator. This represents a win for both the subscriber and the operator," he said. In May 1999, WorldGate received a separate notification from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for 62 claims in its patent application covering its Channel HyperLinking(SM) technology. Channel HyperLinking allows viewers to instantly establish an interactive connection to the Web site associated with the program or advertisement they are watching without the need for the viewer to type in a complicated Web address. The Company has a major research study currently underway with General Motors, Warner Lambert, Kraft, Sprint and Nielsen Media Research to track consumer response and usage of WorldGate's Channel HyperLinking technology and the resulting interactive experience in cable television households. About WorldGate Communications, Inc. Headquartered near Philadelphia, WorldGate Communications has the first commercially deployed service that enables cable subscribers to access a full array of low-cost Internet services and e-mail through their television sets and the cable television infrastructure rather than a personal computer and telephone. The WorldGate(SM) Service marries WorldGate's proprietary technology with the television set platform and either the existing advanced analog or digital cable converter along with a remote control or wireless keyboard to bring the Internet to cable subscribers. Using advanced analog converters; the Service operates at more than 2 times the speed of a standard 56 Kbps telephone modem. With digital converters, the Service can operate at 27 Mbps, over 2.5 times faster than a typical cable modem. For more information, interested parties may go to www.wgate.com.
