PC, chip stocks higher in
trading
Semiconductor Index up for fifth straight
session

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Hardware shares were
mostly higher Tuesday with semiconductor makers such
as Motorola and Advanced Micro Devices posting
positive gains.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index
rose 0.4 percent to 563.04, gaining
speed for the fifth session in a row.

Novellus Systems said it reorganized
and created a new unit, Integration and Advanced
Development, See press release.

The restructuring also joins Novellus' dielectrics and
metals product lines into one unit called Business
Operations.

Novellus (NVLS: news, msgs) was up 5/16 to 65 3/8.

Advanced Micro Devices (NSM:
news, msgs) jumped 1 3/16 to 22 3/16.
Rival chip maker Intel (INTC: news,
msgs) dipped 3/4 to 88 9/16.

Motorola (MOT: news, msgs) was
higher at 97 9/16 and Xilinx (XLNX:
news, msgs) slid 1 5/8 to 73 1/8.

The Goldman Sachs Computer
Hardware Index advanced 0.6 percent.

Gateway (GTW: news, msgs) added 1
7/8 to 100 3/8 ahead of a 2-for-1 stock
split set for the close of trading
Tuesday.

Dell Computer (DELL: news, msgs)
cut prices up to 18 percent on its
OptiPlex business desktop personal
computers with Intel Pentium II and
Pentium III processors. Dell shares
were up 5/16 to 49 3/4. See press
release.

Other PC makers were mixed in trading. Apple (AAPL:
news, msgs) still traded above 70, gaining 2 3/16 to 75
11/16, Compaq (CPQ: news, msgs) fell 3/16 to 23 3/16,
Hewlett-Packard (HWP: news, msgs) rose 1 7/32 to
110 13/16 and IBM (IBM: news, msgs) was up to 128
15/16.
