It also depends on what you consider honor to be. Many people who fight for honor are really saving face for a perceived blow to their pride. Someone who is truly honorable would lose face if serving the better good necessitated it.

Actually a good point for compassion. As some honor-guided people tend to do, in a vendetta situation the family is defined as the reference community, any bigger community doesn't enter the calculation. The empathy people however can claim that empathy has a good deal of an inherent tendency to withstand such subgrouping efforts. MNI
