Michelle - There is an active connection between hi-tech and Hollywood. For example, my ladyfriend works for a small company that does internet pieces, movie trailers and web sites for media companies, and toy companies, too. (Mattel is headquartered here.) Beyond that, there is a vast pool of engineering activity here, though much of it is more centered in Orange County, especially chip companies. The most surprising thing to me is that the weather here is a lot more like San Francisco than San Jose.
