(Nasdaq:SFAM - news), a leading supplier of high-throughput chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) systems for the semiconductor industry and flat surface processing systems for the thin film memory disk media and silicon wafer industries worldwide, today announced a $1.3-million order for its Neptune LPT (Laminar Process Technology) Modular Memory Disk Cleaning System. The order, which reflects the thin film memory disk media industry's transition from aluminum to glass substrates, was placed by a major global supplier of disks to the hard disk drive (HDD) market. ''Strategically, this is an important order for SpeedFam-IPEC,'' said John J. Cerilli, vice president and general manager of the Surface Technology Group. ''LPT is an enabling technology that facilitates our customers' migration to the next generation of disk substrates. The key benefits of the Neptune system are tighter process control and run-to-run consistency, which produce higher yields. The system's 'plug-and-play' modularity minimizes capital costs and equipment obsolescence, resulting in low overall cost of ownership. These benefits have been validated by a leading worldwide supplier of hard disk drives, with the potential for follow-on orders.'' Approximately 90 percent of all HDD disks today are manufactured from aluminum, and 10 percent are manufactured from glass. HDD industry sources expect glass to become the preferred substrate of the future, a trend driven by manufacturers' competitive requirement to continue increasing storage capacity per disk by 60 percent a year. Glass substrates provide improved shock resistance and flatness for higher storage capacity, compared to traditional aluminum substrates. The Neptune LPT Modular Memory Disc Cleaning System was designed and manufactured by SpeedFam-IPEC Co., Ltd., the company's Far East Joint Venture. SpeedFam-IPEC, Inc.
