CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 7, 1999--

Infranet(TM) provides complete billing system for a leading
provider of broadband Internet access

Portal Software Inc. (NASDAQ: PRSF), a leading provider of
business infrastructure software for Internet and next-generation
communications services, announced today that Covad Communications, a
leading provider of broadband access, has selected and implemented
Infranet(TM) as the billing component for its Digital Subscriber Line
(DSL) service. Infranet's real-time technology will enable Covad to
provide it's national subscriber base instant account creation, to
launch new products and services and to manage multiple pricing plans
for their home and business users.
"Covad is the recognized leader in broadband DSL service, and our
rapid growth requires a system that is flexible and scalable," said
Hamid Alipour, Chief Information Officer at Covad. "Portal's Infranet
is a good fit for us because of its adaptability and ease of
integration with our front-end and back-end systems."
Infranet's unique application programming interface enabled Covad
to implement Portal's business infrastructure system in twelve weeks,
a critical factor in the decision to adopt the software. Covad
currently services 51 metropolitan statistical areas with a variety of
pricing plans and customer service agreements. Infranet provides Covad
with a comprehensive system that enables them to quickly introduce new
business models, to develop specialized promotions and to launch new
products and services.
Covad's DSL service allows high-speed access to the Internet and
corporate networks through the copper phone wires found in businesses
and homes today. DSL offers customers a dedicated and secure data
connection which is always available. Currently these services are
available through a number of Internet service providers around the
country. Infranet will be able to bill ISPs according to the structure
developed for particular regions.
"Covad's Digital subscriber line service demonstrates the kind of
next-generation technologies that demonstrate the power of Infranet,"
said Steve Sommer, vice president business development at Portal. "The
broadband market is highly competitive and successful companies will
require a customer management and billing solution that will give them
the flexibility and scalability necessary to develop new and exciting
business models to grow and be competitive."
