If you're not a hunter, then you can go with the heavy barrels and stocks.

I love the 308 varieties, for both, esp the 300 win mag. Some may think it is too small, but I took a big brownie with it, one shot. And many deer, moose, caribou, etc. over our 25 years together.

If you are just getting into long shots with a rifle you are also going to have to learn a bunch about air quality, esp crosswinds - which are an especial pain in the ass. On long shots, there may be cross winds you are unaware of between you and the target - just like sailing and you are wondering where that guy is getting wind from. -g- I once had a bullet fly 8 feet to the left over about 400 yards. You need a good spotter in that case to walk 'em over. I don't think even the late Carlos Hathcock could figure out long cross winds. -ng-
