You have hit on the head my problem with those who espouse a literal adherence to the Bible. Which Bible? (Very few literalists have read the Bible in its original text.) And which books? There was great debate early on as to what did and didn't belong in the Bible. Indeed, not so early on; the Catholic and Protestant bibles are different!

That said, I do think that there are many of Christ's teachings which have survived the writing process with sufficient accuracy to be reasonably relied on. And for those who believe in continuing revelation and a personal relationship with Christ, of course the problem is not with Biblical text at all but with knowing whichrevelations and relationship experiences are "true" and which are not.
