Interesting Mark, I would suggest that "compassion" flows from the "trust" domain more than the other way around. Being compassionate toward your fellow countryman comes after you trust them. You can't have trust unless you have trustworthy people. Trustworthiness flows from a common set of principles around which people believe. "I hold these truths to be self-evident". How? Truths are meaningless unless trust is involved. Society needs trust in government, in ourselves, and in our leadership, in order to unleash the compassion of its people.

So which great builder was the most compasionate?

Sure, Christ was, but he died too quick to build much, plus it helps alot when God is on you side.

Alexander the Great?
Ivan the Terrible?
Gengis Khan?
Mao Tse Sung?

How about the Aztec Empire?
Or colonial France?

What has compassion built? Are there any great events or compassion in history? Did the Egyptians ever do a "Hands across the Nile" for starving Nubians?

Compassion as a bridge builder is a bunch of hooey. America needs compasion because we haven't exterminated our minorites like most great empires did. (I'm not advocating that we do either.)

Read 1984, that book will show you what compassion is. It is a tool used by the elite to control the proletarians. If it makes you feel better to say you are being nice, then ok, go ahead.

But the real reason is that the rich don't want the poor to rob us, so we are nice to them. (I'm sounding like a Black Panther now, get whitey!)
