Last Mile. Watch out for moose crossing the roads!! stokab.se

Sweden has always been open to new technology and its rapid adoption. One
hundred years ago, Sweden had the highest telephone density in the world in
absolute terms, ahead of New York, Berlin and London. The tradition has been
maintained ever since. Today, Sweden is the European leader in the use of
advanced information technology. You will find an enduring and solid industrial
tradition in Sweden, with an efficient infrastructure and a high level of
competitiveness within many technologically advanced fields.

The Stockholm telecom market
As a result of Stokab's efforts, Stockholm has quite likely developed the most
dynamic telecom market in Europe. To name but a few examples: EU statistics
show that as of autumn 1998, Sweden had 57 international telecom operators;
Stockholm is the home of 75-80% of the IT industry in Sweden; and some 20% of
all employees in the private sector work with IT and IT-related industries.
Stockholm is not on its way into the information society - Stockholm is living the
information society. More than half of the population are regularly connected to
the Internet, own a home computer and communicate with one another via mobile
phone.

The new media industry
New media is a collective term for businesses that produce digital interactive
media and offer associated consulting services. In a very short period, this
industry has made remarkable impact on society. Three of the world's largest
new media companies have their headquarters in Stockholm. Two of them began
operating only about three years ago but already have offices in Europe, Asia and
North America.
According to a study carried out by the producers' association PROMISE
(Producers of Multimedia in Sweden), an estimated 1,200 Swedish firms are
involved in creating interactive media. The figure is sensationally high by
international standards.

The information society
To top it all off, Swedes are probably the world's most advanced and demanding
users. (Every second Swede owns a mobile phone and, along with the U.S.,
Sweden has the world's highest PC density. Use of the Internet is also among
the highest in the world. According to a study carried out in February 1999, 51%
of the population between the ages of 16 and 70 use the Internet more or less
regularly. In some categories the figure is over 70%; most of the corresponding
figures are higher still for Stockholm on its own.)
