The Amazon way. What do you do when your company is facing mounting losses and escalating expenses? You promote your CFO. It makes perfect sense.

By the way, another Amazon VP, David Risher (senior VP of Product Development), sold 60,000 shares on Aug. 10, 1999 for $5.02 million. Since Nov. 10, 1998, Mr. Risher has sold 207,000 shares for total proceeds of $26.5 million. You have to wonder if Mr. Risher knows something we don't. Or perhaps he is planning his departure. Or maybe he is just diversifying.

Thanks,
-Eric

sorry, sloppy wording on my part.

I was just trying to say that, rightly or wrongly, investors tend to look to CFOs at rocketship companies to keep the chaos controlled and productive, or at least to be aware of what it is all going to cost and to make sure that that operational inefficiencies hypergrowth inevitably breeds are not allowed to fester. Once Covey announced that she was moving to a more strategic/visionary position, her ability to play the former role was compromised, imo. I'm glad the company has a permanent CFO, that's all.

The best CFOs--and here I would include folks like Tom Meredith at Dell, who used to work w/Covey, and Covey herself--use the insight their unique position affords to help shape their company's strategy. Right now, however, AMZN has plenty of visionaries. They face an enormous execution challenge. I am pretty sure they will meet it, but I confess to breathing easier now that the CFO position has been filled.

Incidentally, do you know anything about this guy from your television days?

Maybe she was covertly announcing her conversion to scientology and upper management did her a favor?

BTW- I am still holding my Sep 95 MSFT puts, purchased this morning for slightly over 1 1/2. Today they closed at 2 1/2. That's 66% profit in 6 hours.

Radim- SORRY MAN!! Redhat is 108 after hours. I totally forgot that today ends their quiet period. However, this could be a positive for my MSFT puts tomorrow if the hype extends.. The CEO was on CNBC a few minutes ago badmouthing microsoft, saying "our aim is not to be a niche player, but a replacement for the existing proprietary operating system"
(ie microsoft)
