Seahawks' report: Speaking of backup QBs, the Seahawks are set with Foley and Huard. Huard has a chance to be an NFL great. The 'Hawks are a bit weak in the corner position and Holmgren picked up a guy from Jacksonville off of the waiver wire. They kept 5 offensive backs, Watters and Green and 3 FBs. LB is a bit thinner than expected with Myles having a nagging injury. Two rookie DLs were kept. Galloway is still out and should have either been signed or traded - last week. The 'Hawks are saying they won't deal him until after the second game, which makes no sense to me. So the 'Hawks are good on defense, with an outstanding starting front 7, and good backups. The defensive right corner is suspect with Willie Williams. The switching of Bellamy and (Daryl) Williams across the safety positions has helped both players. They've found a capable backup safety in a 2nd year man (kerry joseph?). With the weakness at corner Springs needs to stay healthy this year. It's a bit disconcerting that they had to bring in a cb who couldn't make it at Jax. It goes something like, "that guy couldn't make the Jags but he's better than our weakest cb..." not good. On offense, the RB position looks solid, as long as Green can stop fumbling the ball. The 3 FBs are strong, and at TE they have to good pass-catchers in Fauria and Mili. At QB Kitna is the most exciting one we've had since Dave Krieg. The big question in my mind is whether he can throw the ball away when he needs to - he's got a tendency to throw every down, whether there's anyone open or not. That seems to foreshadow sacks and INTs. Like I said, let's just hope Kitna can keep his cool, because his on-the-field presence has proven to be very strong thus far. With his lack of real-game experience it's almost like he's "one of the rookie QBs" this year. The OL looks good, except that Ballard retired. His backup is capable though. There was at least one rookie OL kept from the draft. 4 out of 5 of these guys (would have been 5 out of 5 if Ballard had been able to go) played as starters on the line last year, which is probably decent from a "continuity" standpoint. In contrast, there are some OLs in the league which were patched together just in the last few weeks, with players who've never played together in the regular season together. At wideout they will miss the outside speed of Galloway, but the team itself might be stronger because of it. Galloway seems to have shown Holmgren that he's not a team player. DE Sinclair went to camp under nearly identical contract conditions, but it worked out for him. Holmgren doesn't seem to appreciate it when players under contract miss camp. So Pritchard is out for week one, leaving them with Sean Dawkins and Mayes as the 1 and 2 wideouts for week 1. I'll tell you something... I think that Dawkins is a better receiver than Galloway. Dawkins may not be that kind of burner, but he has size. For "run after catch" (RAC) yardage, Dawkins is going to be better. There is a rap on Galloway that he can't beat bump-and-run, and he also has a reputation for taking himself out of games at critical moments. I think that Holmgren may be considering these things while he dotes on getting Galloway into camp. The radio commentators here say that Galloway means one or two wins to this team. I'm not convinced. Like I said, you get outside speed with the guy but from what I've seen over the years... not a lot of heart. Judging from what little I've seen thus far, this offense appears to be a system built around team players. That is why Galloway won't be as missed as people say he will be. For an example, going back to Holmgren's GB days, didn't they manage to win 3 out of 4 or something with both Freemand and Brooks out? I think that 10 games is the barometer for this season - less wins and it will be a failure and more wins will be a great success. The key will be time of possession. Last year they averaged only about 27 minutes a game. If they reverse that - raise it to 33 versus 27 on average for each opponent - they should have great success. This is one of the best defensive front 7s in football!... watch that defensive right corner (opposite Springs). Predictions: 1) Galloway to the 'Skins for a 1st round pick and 2nd-tier receiver. Do it now!! 2) After picking up linemen and a qb in this last draft, in the next draft the "Hawks will probably grab a couple of high-profile corners in the hopes that one of them will play opposite Springs. All in all I like the concept that Holmgren has that this is a team sport, that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts." FWIW Andy
