<Should merced turn out to be all that it should be, then what pray tell is Intels plans for writing off all those fabs making pentiums which are made obsolete by merced?>

Greg, none of those fabs are made obsolete by Merced or IA-64. Merced is going to be manufactured in the same 0.18 micron process as the upcoming IA-32 Coppermine.

By the way, Intel is busy working on Willamette, a "seventh-generation processor" of their own (borrowing from AMD's terminology). Intel has already said that IA-64 and IA-32 will coexist for years to come.
