Interesting reference to Japanese abortion rate and consequences. The abortion rate is one direct consequence of the Japanese government's unwillingness to approve birth control pills for sale in Japan. I'm not sure if it finally changed that position this year or not. It appears the misguided policy did not achieve the intended result.

Neocon, my daughter returned from a trip to Japan about 2 weeks ago. She and her husband took many pictures of beautiful gardens and temples, about 8 rolls of film. But there was a common scene in many of the pictures, in the gardens, along roadways and just about any place you could think of there were small shrines that had stone statues of babys, standing about 2 feet tall with what looked like aprons and other garments put on them, also flowers on the ground etc., Most of the shrines in the pictures had many of these statues. Almost like one for each neighborhood, community etc., I asked my daughter if she knew why they were there. She was told that they represented babies that were miscarriges, still-born or had died shortly after birth. There was no mention of abortion. But I wonder if the translator did not mention this to my daughter because of the honor factor. Anyhow these shrines were everywhere and they also took a picture of one of the places where you could buy these statues. There were rows and rows of these stone statues of babies. It looked so strange, but there was a definite feeling of sadness. Not something you see in the travel guides. Colleen
