V-One Doubles After Debut of Linux-Related Software Germantown, Maryland, Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of V-One Corp., a maker of security software, more than doubled to their highest level in two years after the company introduced a product that works with the free Linux computer-operating system. V-One, whose software secures data and communication sent over the Internet, rose 2 31/32 to 5 7/32 in trading of 20.7 million shares, more than 300 times its three-month daily average. It was the fourth-most-active stock in U.S. markets. The Germantown, Maryland-based company unveiled software for small companies called Instant Extranet Server that works with Linux, a rival operating system to Microsoft Corp.'s dominant Windows software. V-One's new product lets users share encrypted documents and e-mail online. 'A good piece'' of V-One's rise comes from investor enthusiasm for Linux, said Barry Glasgow, a LaSalle Street Securities analyst who rates the shares ''buy.''''A lot of it obviously has to do with Red Hat.'' Red Hat Inc., which sells a commercial version of Linux and provides associated services, rose 23 1/16, or 27 percent, to 108 today. The company first sold shares to the public on Aug. 11 for $14 each and has risen on optimism that more companies will use Linux. The stock touched a record 109 7/8 earlier today. V-One will sell its new software for $1,500 for 15 copies and $4,000 for 50 copies. V-One said the product should appeal to small companies because it is quick and easy to install. The company makes a similar product for large companies called SmartGate, which works with a variety of operating systems. V-One, which trades on the Nasdaq Small Cap Market, reported a loss of $2.2 million, or 13 cents a share, on sales of $1 million in the second quarter. Company officials weren't immediately available to comment.
