Do you think people will pay $30 per month for hardware rental? or buy a cheap sub-$400 computer and never pay rental.

Ho Ho Ho. Devices with this spec used to be called X-Terminals. Interesting that they are floating this idea again. But, IMHO the only way they will get this to fly is to give away the hardware (no leases, no purchase) and charge for service. A bunch of ISP's are starting to use this business model. The SunRay should be cheap enough that this would be effective, certainly cheaper than a WinTel machine.

Otherwise this seems like a flop to me.

Yeah, this is a bit of a mind blower (Retro X?). Maybe it goes like, thinnest possible client for local networks and then adds the Java client as a second phase or option. I wonder if it's a sealed case or what.

But hey, if Bill Joy says it's ascended, it must be.

The $10mo thing is kinda cool. At this point, CIOs know EXACTLY what PC 'terminals' are costing them per month, and it's got to be more than not buying an Ultra server and a big bag o' SunRays.

Sun should probably give up the notion of making margin on monitors.
