Here's an interesting article by a MD/journalist which reviews the history of zinc as a cold treatment. He concludes any efficacy is due largely to a placebo effect:

NEJM, vol. 341, No, 12, no Zicam (GUMM) article; week ten counting from the first mention here, week nineteen if Dr. Epstein's post about the article already having been submitted two months prior to the mention here is correct. He also pointed out:"that most rejected articles are rejected within 6 weeks."
