Carl, a word re. mutual fund cash levels: they are exceptionally low right now (slightly over 4%), and have trended ever lower in recent years, as being fully invested has become a sort of mantra among mutual fund managers. however, these cash levels are not useful as a timing tool, though they are indicative of the market running into problems at some point in the future. for the chart comparisons you seek, go to

decisionpoint.com

where historical technical charts can be found. just to point out a few highlights: the current a/d line divergence is the worst since 1929 in terms of depth and duration, and the NH/NL differential peaked in October '97. clearly, the longer term outlook for the market is clouded, even though i would not be surprised to see a final, extremely narrow blow-off rally before any serious problems develop.
