should I dodwnlod LQID? What's great about it?

I suppose I could answer that without even getting into Tef's OT doghouse since an answer sheds a bit of light on the nature of the competition in RNWK's market segment.

Liquid has had a player for some time -- almost as long as Real if I recall -- but they've never managed to get all that many sites to use their technology. What made me get the new player was the site below, which offers an eclectic array of music streamed in either Real's or Liquid's format.

kcrw.org (you then have to click a month over in the left panel in this pretty "beware:designer at work" site with dreadful navigation.)
Or:
kcrw.org (Check out Pink Martini's Que Sera Sera with just a touch of Balkans funeral march.)

Especially at higher rates, but even at the "56K Modem rate", the sound quality of these streams strikes me as far superior to anything available on a Real site, and I've also experienced less net-connection slowdowns than with Real -- but that may be only because there are fewer folks hitting the servers.

Liquid is one of several companies, including AT&T and Microsoft, that offers an encoding method for songs that allows publishers some control over how they are copied and distributed. There are several examples of such downloadable songs on their web site at liquidaudio.com. But it's these non-downloadable streams that have hooked me in the last few days.

To get that, of course, LQID has to convince content providers to install their server software. Even though they probably gave it to them as a donation, KCRW (which is also available live on RealPlayer) was a great client to get.
