Thanks to Aus I have the Casseopia E-15. OK its black and white but the battery lasts for weekson one charge ( you don't keep these devices on for more than a few minutes at a time). I'd like to change up to the 105 but waiting for a little better price and the truth is that I don't need color.

RElatively cheap and great working with my PC and Outlook. Easy , just pop it in the cradle and it syncs. Very good tech support from Cassio, the best i've ever seen.

Best regards,

L

Jason,

If you are only using PIM functions it is a bit hard to get excited about a 64K color model with stereo sound and a 131 MHz RISC processor. I bought the Cassiopeia (and haven't given the thread an update on my "user experience" yet) because it reads digital images off my CF card (direct from my digital camera) and it plays high quality mp3 recordings. (It also plays low quality mpeg videos.) I consider it as an R&D investment. It is overkill for PIM use alone (and it is relatively heavy and hard on the juice).

On vacation I loaded a German language translation program on a 8 MB CF card which was much more convenient than a pocket dictionary. I used the Note Taker function to keep a brief diary of things we did, some bookkeeping of expenses and money exchanges, and a list of new German words for reference. These types of functions (exchange of textual information) are a slam dunk for most handheld devices. I suspect even a Palm Pilot would suffice. Windows CE is an adequate system for entry of text and for general database sorting. That is to say, many applications have a core library of information (like a dictionary, a list, maps,...) which are essentially interfaced with relatively simple software programs that sort, edit, collate and spoon feed the data back to the user. WinCE has limited pure computational power in my experience. Having said that, it is well suited for multimedia applications which are essentially large chunks of data (.jpegs, .mpegs, .mp3's) that can be rapidly uploaded and viewed from the storage card. It cannot edit, compress or reprocess these files, however.

Many PalmPC enthusiasts are also into gaming. There is a wealth of programs available on the net which are best enjoyed in high resolution color and stereo.

I guess my recommendation would depend on more specific interests or potential interests you may have. I know there is a PalmOS-to-WinCE conversion program available to transfer/translate PIM data if you originally purchased a Palm Pilot. Most WinCE purchases come with the software.

Send me a private mail about your specific interests and I will do my best to guide you.

Jason,

The information I gave you before was incorrect. The Compaq Aero has the side window for passive LCD illumination. This is supposed a great plus if you plan on using your PDA outside.

To my knowledge the Cassiopeia E-100 and E-105 are the only devices offering both 65K color and a stereo headset. The sound is awesome on my E-100 which has software for .mp3 and .wma (Microsoft Audio Player) files.

Again, if PIM is your major interest I would consider a Palm III or Palm V. But be sure to complain about the lack of a CF slot!!!
