HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1999--
Service Will Be Available in 60 Cities in Early 2000 PSINet Inc. (Nasdaq: PSIX), the first and largest independent commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP), today announced that PSINet DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) service is now available in 21 major metropolitan markets. The markets are: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Raleigh/Durham, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington, DC. The launch follows a successful trial of the service in partnership with Covad Communications (Nasdaq: COVD) in Los Angeles that was completed on August 31.
DSL technology allows Internet connectivity over existing copper infrastructures that can be implemented at a lower cost than traditional circuits. It uses a line-coding scheme that allows high-speed connections through ordinary two-wire copper telephone lines, thus helping to eliminate the "last mile" bottleneck to high-speed communications. The connection is up to 40 times faster than the speed of traditional dial-up modems. DSL will reduce local loop charges and installation time compared to traditional dedicated connections, while providing a seamless integration of DSL technology and PSINet's premiere services such as PSINet Dedicated Access and PSINet IntraNet. Rates for corporate connectivity begin at $159 per month and vary depending on the type of service implemented.
Working in partnership with Covad, a leading broadband provider, PSINet is offering DSL in a standard format as well as in an enhanced solution designed to provide quality and value to PSINet's global commercial customers. Covad recently announced its intention to reach 40% of US homes and businesses by the end of 2000. This expansion will add 49 new metropolitan markets and 19 states to Covad's national footprint.
PSINet also announced additional agreements to further extend the reach of its DSL service. The additional partners will supplement Covad's nationwide distribution and coverage. The first agreement is with Rhythms NetConnections Inc. (Nasdaq: RTHM).
Rhythms provides nationwide high-performance networking solutions for businesses, using DSL technology to provide high-speed remote access to private networks and the Internet. The agreement will increase geographic coverage and accelerate the delivery nationally of PSINet DSL.
PSINet has also entered into a long-term agreement in principle with Network Access Solutions (Nasdaq: NASC) for the provisioning of DSL services throughout the eastern United States. PSINet will be utilizing NAS in key metropolitan areas to provide PSINet's business customers with a variety of DSL services interconnected to PSINet's global backbone and that will be directly managed by PSINet.
"By partnering with leading DSL providers we are able to rapidly deploy a high quality product nationally," said Charles Cary, PSINet's vice president of product management and development. "Customers will have the benefit of PSINet's IP-based global network and quality DSL service in major cities throughout the US by midyear 2000. PSINet DSL is designed to provide businesses an affordable high speed solution to their needs without sacrificing the quality customers expect. The initial rollout gives us access to a market of more than 2.9 million small businesses, with another 1 million in the coming months."
