Honor and dishonor then are the objects with which the great-souled man is concerned.

The great-souled man then, is especially concerned with honor.

It strikes me that perhaps the emphasis of honor coincides with the belief that we have souls. Without souls we have less dignity, with less dignity there is less need for honor. If one believes we don't have souls, there is no need for a hierarchy of virtues, no need for virtues at all.
