I think on the last conference call, Wilf said that the 'value' to LSI is higher on PSII than PSI.

Also, at 20M transistors, compared to 5M for Pentium, I suspect they are not making that at 0.25um. If Pentium cost $30 for Intel at 0.25um, that Toshiba CPU cost is just sky high. Probably just can't yield high enough to sell at the suggested retail price. 0.18um is a ways off. I won't be surprised that probably just Intel or IBM can do it at this point, and even then, not running a full fab flat out on 0.18um.

That PSII CPU chip is a major project, including dedicating a full fab towards it. It would have been fool hardy for LSI to try taking that business even if it was open to them. Glad LSI didn't.
