Heck, Greg, I always thought that these firms made their money off of the interest spread on margin accounts (plus of course the pittance that they pay those timid souls who may actually have credit balances from time to time) <g>

I don't know, nor really care, if they do. My only point was that any organization that acts as a dealer (not only a broker) can mark up stock. The discounters and not the only guilty parties.

I use Waterhouse, and I have never received/paid worse that the bid/ask quoted. I have even compared quotes with others to insure they were correct. So far, I have been unable to find a discrepancy nor have I ever felt I paid too much. (Well, maybe awhile after the fact.)

Etrade charges $20 for NASDAQ trades, $15 for NYSE. Trade commissions are the biggest chunk of their revenues. Have been using them for almost 3 years now and been mostly satisfied.
