Yeah I remember covering Reagan when he visited a batch of farmers in Chester County back in 81 or 82. They were not a happy lot. Land values had cratered. Interest rates made it impossible to borrow. Reagan didnt have much to say, but he was pleasant enough and they all really wanted to like him and convince him to do something. Didnt have much impact. The current situation is somewhat different, but the issues are the same: Too little income, too much debt, declining land values. In Chester County, of course, exurban development has replaced farms. And in the rest of the country, the giants scooped up the land when the smaller farmers were forced to sell. Its amazing, really, that there are any small family farms left. Lancaster County is an anomaly. M2
