Plus the fact that his face was kinda moony, and he was a little chunky, so when you hear "Orbison," you think "round." If he picked "Orbison," if that wasn't his real name but his stage name, it was a peculiar pick.

I was surprised to read that he's not considered country, he's at least as country as early Elvis, in my opinion. His voice had a country twang to it. Maybe early rockabilly. But that doesn't mean I am putting him down, I really love him.

The grandmother that had the cafe had a jukebox, with lots of great songs. "Pretty Woman" was one I played all the time. After she closed the cafe, and was cleaning up, she'd give us kids a bunch of quarters with an "X" on them in red fingernail polish. Those were her quarters, when the guys came to take the money out of the jukebox and the pinball machines, they always gave her the red quarters back. And we would play pinball and play music on the jukebox, and drink cokes, Lydia and I, until maybe 1 or 2 in the morning. There were also some glass cases on the counters with goodies in them like slices of pie on a plate, and donuts, and we could have one goody each. Our hair would get all full of cigarette smoke because my grandmother smoked a lot, her favorite was Vogue cigarettes that were pink, with a gold filter. And when she drove around, we could light the cigarette for her and hand it to her. She always got a yellow Chevrolet Impala, new every two years.

So that's what I think about when I think about Roy Orbison.
