It was my son's coming out that made me take a more active role in defending homosexual behavior.

As I said before when a child comes out the parents usually go into a period of mourning. Many of our hopes had died. Hopes for him to be happily married and have children.

My wife and I then joined PFLAG and through their programs and reading various books I learned about the injustices that gays endure. I became more aware of newspaper articles about mistreatment of gays and physical assaults of gays. I was always concerned about physical assaults while my wife worried more about diseases.

After a couple of years we became comfortable with his and my daughter's orientation. But we decided to take a more active roll to make the world safer for our kids. So now I try to educate people that there are real dangers out there for gays.

My wife is the advocacy chair for PFLAG and I am the treasurer. My wife writes letters to newspapers all over the country in support of gays. A few times we have received hate letters as a result.

PFLAG is not a political organization. We do not promote candidates nor do we contribute to any political parties.

At PFLAG we have met many wonderful parents and their gay children. It is a relief to see the love that a gay couple shares and we now have hope that someday our kids will be in a good loving relationship. Maybe they will even marry.

In about 2 weeks we will walk in the Chicago Aids Walk. Neither of our kids have aids or are HIV positive but we do it for the gay population in general. And heaven forbid we never know if our kids will need it in the future. If anyone wants to make a tax deductible contribution please PM me. (sorry for the commercial)

So that is why I am trying to raise the awareness of everyone on this thread. Just a dad looking out for his kids anyway he can.

Erase Hate,
Dennis
