"Why is Nextel trying to get NextWave's PCS licenses?"

Because Craig McCaw is an opportunist. Aren't you aware that NXTL also tried to buy GOTK's 900 mhz licenses out of bankruptcy? And wouldn't you get more real estate, er, uh, I mean, wireless licenses, if you had the chance to do so? You bet your sweet bippy you would and that's exactly why CM is going after NW's licenses. Why would NXTL want to deploy CDMA unless they had some way to connect it to the iDEN system? Answer: They wouldn't. So if their intention is to deploy a 3G CDMA system, then MOT has told them that the two systems can be tied together. How code division can communicate with time division is beyond me. I've clearly over my head in the technical area. My guess is that NXTL would deploy a 3G iDEN version on NW's licenses.

As to 3G being CDMA, are you not aware that it is supposed to be compatible with GSM? Or are you foolish enough to think that Erickksen's peace pact with QCOM requires Europe to replace its GSM systems? Clue line: It ain't gonna happen.

The point is NO ONE KNOWS WHAT 3G WILL LOOK LIKE. IT IS VAPORWARE. I'll bet that MOT is working as hard on 3G for iDEN as it and other wireless manufacturers are for CDMA, TDMA and GSM. The wireless stakes are enormous and I'd never bet against Craig McCaw.
