Jim, obviously i agree...buy and hold may work well in extended bull markets, but certainly not in a more normal environment, in which severe bear markets occur from time to time. since the current bull market has been the most extended in history, the bear market that will follow on it's heels may be especially severe. the buy-and-holders, naturally, will sell close to the bottom. what people had to say about mutual funds in '74 is not fit for print...and the biggest outflows occurred near the bottom, when pessimism was at it's peak.
