VeriSign Join Forces to Secure VirtualPrivate Networks; Combination Of VeriSign OnSite and Xedia's AccessPoint QVPN Extends the Use of Digital Certificate Services To VPNs

September 8, 1999 08:41 AM
ACTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1999--Xedia Corporation, the leading provider of Internet access routers that deliver advanced IP Quality of Service (QoS), security and price/performance, and VeriSign Inc. VRSN , the world's leading provider of Internet-based trust services, today announced that they have teamed up to integrate their products and services to deliver extended digital certificate services for virtual private networks (VPNs). Through the implementation of a standards-based public key infrastructure (PKI), users of Access Point QVPN are now able to choose VeriSign as their preferred digital certificate services vendor.

Enterprises are building large-scale VPNs to provide business management, supply-chain management, self-help human resources, and online banking and trading for thousands to tens-of-thousands of customers, partners, and employees. These large-scale applications have created a need for quick and easy deployment of a secure infrastructure using digital certificates--including the ability to allow secure access to these applications from remote locations. VPNs provide a cost-effective means of extending the corporate network out to mobile workers, telecommuters and day extenders and are replacing expensive leased lines for site-to-site connections, and communicating with business partners. PKI technology oversees the issuing usage, renewal, expiration and revocation of digital certificates, which are used for purposes of identifying individuals or network devices in a secure and authenticated fashion. With digital certificates companies can provide network access in a controlled and secure manner.

"The deployment of secure remote-access controls via electronic credentials is crucial to companies as they continue to establish and expand their business presence on the Internet," said Mary Anderson, vice president of enterprise product marketing for VeriSign. "Integrating VeriSign's digital certificate services into Xedia's Access Point QVPN will give enterprises a solution that enables quick and easy deployment of a scalable site-to-site and remote access VPN."

"Our customers require open solutions and a choice of PKI technologies as they build VPNs," said Robert Steinkrauss, president of Xedia Corporation. "Demonstrating interoperability with market leaders, such as VeriSign, enables Xedia to extend user capabilities and easily deploy multi-vendor PKI solutions."
