maybe so, but the non-extreme examples diverge considerably. Imo of course. Extreme practitioners of heterosexuality get jailed for rape after all.

>And why do you reject n>2, for either homo- or heterosexual marriages? Anything
more than priestly imposed custom? <g><

Because multiparty marriage is either psychologically unnatural (say two husbands and two wives) or inherently inegalitarian (polygamy or polyandry). People tend to pair off. It's a human characteristic. Where there are more than two there is always hierarchy. Husband, wife, lover, with lover at the bottom of the totem pole.
In polygamous societies having more than one wife is the province of the rich or powerful man. Often it is a marker of conspicuous consumption; recall the Sultan's harem.
In the West the sole major example of a society that accepts polygamy is Mormon (with disagreement among their ranks as to the soundness of the practice). I consider that an aberration ... I don't know how this came to be a part of Mormon doctrine. It is worth noting that polygamous Mormons are not real strong feminists ... the women are strictly subordinated to the men.
In a modern egalitarian society the bottom line is that practically nobody would want to enter into the wide end of a polymarital relationship. How many women would choose to share a husband? How many men would choose to share a wife? As a wife and not a lover? Very few I wager. The pairing drive is strong in us H. Sapiens types.
