In the interest of "fair" posting, I think I should voice my concern over the insider trading going on at APC. Mostly all sells and pretty large amounts as well. Even though I like APC going forward, I don't like to see the management so actively "trading".

Take a peek at APA, for example and the latest shows only buys.

Hmmmm....makes one think a little.

FGI vs E&P's: Roebear, I agree with Slider on this one. When you look at relative value re sales, consider that FGI's sales are about to dive (backlog shrinking drastically) while the E&P's sales are increasing (increased demand and higher prices).

I took profits on FGI just after the merger announcement. I had bought it on the basis of its growth in sales/earnings. I'm sure you remember it being Business Week's #1 pick. But I came to realize that the offshore rig construction boom was probably a one time blip. There are still a lot of these rigs coming on line this year and next. Like VRC, FGI is a great company, and they will survive with maintenance work and other small projects. "Someday" FSPO's and rig building/conversions "may" cause them to again fly high.

IMHO we may have peaked out here. Too much good news for my contrarian blood. And to me the overall market is shakey. I took some profits in FSESX today in my Roth. It's great to take profits and never have to pay taxes on them.

An E&P, I've liked for some time is Forest Oil (FST). Any opinions? It's a 3 bagger since March. A lot of debt, but...

Artic: Thanks for your earlier opinions on MEXP, they kept me from getting on that rollercoaster before the dive.

<Another question to consider with FGI/HLX is relative value. >

John; in all due respect - the one valuation metric that one can 'not' use on companies with dramatically declining backlogs - is anything based on trailing 12 mos... (HMAR would be the valuation champ!)HLX's sales multiple is offset by its low margins etc. I think that the entire story for the next 12 mos. is FGI must get some major offshore rig orders - period. This stock will get more short interest (and they will not be hedging shorts) as the backlog gets worked off month, by month... I'd be curious as to their 'bid' activity - another good question for Big Dog in the FGI profile...

OK; you guys keep bitching & moaning about all the E&P talk here.... here's a freebie: MDR

Does anyone else know another company with $10-11 per share in cash, selling for $20 !!!! - nearly 50% of shareprice in cash on hand ! --- this is a Buffetesque play here - and a real sleeper folks... MDR ! worth a look for you that are not 110% in E&P's (VBG)... John; this one sells for .45 x sales - and has cash piling to the rafters.

biz.yahoo.com ---> for the basics

Anyone remember the excellent article from theStreet.com on MDR earlier this year ?

For anyone wanting a stock with Zero risk of BK - having a sterling balance sheet - loaded with cash - excellent fundamental valuation metrics - and is near 1/2 of prior highs from the last upswing... look no farther than MDR !

....PS; shame, shame, shame for you OSX fans letting some little ole' nickel & dime micro cap E&P hypster having to drag this under your noses for the sniff test....

MDR looks like a must own - in ANY driller/service portfolio.

fwiw; I own neither FGI HLX MDR - nor have I in months, nor will I anytime soon - I still see far superior fundamentals for near and midterm upside in the E&P sector. I merely was looking for future plays - and this one stopped me in my tracks. yes; I actually stumbled upon a no-brainer in the driller/service arena. I really like this one.

Anyone else following this closely ? - I merely did a quick scan - no detailed research.

PS; Got MEXP ?
