The embrace of some sort of underlying order among physicists is not so uncommon, although those who hold to the narrative I described find it disturbing. (I call it a narrative because it is a summary of the beliefs held about the role of religion and "free- thinking" in the course of history). There was a conference on the relationship between religion and science sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, held at the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum last spring. I missed it, but read something about it, and several of the participating physicists admitted that they could not elude the sense of there being something like a Mind behind the cosmos, although they were loathe to use conventional religious terms.....
