thanks, tom... i'd also heard that cable in austin has some speed problems... and i haven't looked into it a whole lot... but think i'd also heard some kind of security issues about always being "on" and connected to the same cable as your neighbors... although i have no idea if or how dsl would be different in that regard... so at this point i am still looking at options and appreciate you telling me about roadrunner... kathy :)
