<Beer News> Mysore Breweries to add fizz to ASDA (Wall Mart UK)cobrabeer.com Mysore Breweries Ltd (MBL) to add fizz to Asda lager Asha Rai (ETonline) BANGALORE 8 SEPTEMBER LATER this month, Asda, the 400-store strong supermarket chain in United Kingdom which Wal-Mart recently acquired, will start selling 'Asda' Indian premium lager. And guess who is supplying the technical know-how for this beer? The Bangalore-based, Mysore Breweries Ltd (MBL). The lager is being manufactured at Riva Breweries in Belgium under a technical tie-up with MBL. MBL will get a royalty on sales, said Mr K P Balasubramaniam, vice chairman and managing director, MBL. MBL is also looking at the possibility of entering into a similar arrangement with Wal-Mart in America, he added. The Asda deal is a shot in the arm to MBL, as this is perhaps the first instance when an Indian brewer is providing the technical know-how for a well-known international store brand. Store brands or the own brands of large supermarkets/ chains these days are giving the well-known brands a run for their money. For MBL, which already makes and sells its Cobra brand of beer in UK, this represents a new business opportunity as well as a large potential market, as super market chains like Asda have a huge reach. MBL is actively scouting for niche markets abroad. It has also launched Palisades, a light lager under the brand name in America. This brand is brewed by MBL in India and shipped to the USA. Palisades is available in California, and the American distributor for the product is Zoelane Inc of Tustin, California. Palisades is available in 120 Asian restaurants in the region, said Mr Balasubramaniam. The brand was launched three months ago, and MBL has already shipped five containers worth $30,000 so far. MBL is also supplying Bengal lager to Australia from India at the rate of one container a month. MBL's exports stood at Rs 7 crore last year. Exports are expected to be higher this year.
