>>PC unit volumes to surge 24.8% in Q3, predicts research firm
A service of Semiconductor Business News, CMP Media Inc.
Story posted 10:45 a.m. EST/7:45 a.m., PST, 9/8/99<<

first of all, the grammar in the above sentence isn't even correct. second of all, fred hickey's article cites specific references to an article posted on this thread or mike's thread.

something along the lines of... "no matter how low prices drop, unit volumes are still dropping."

if you are incapable of keeping current on news articles then so be it. your ignorance is the source of your amazement (btw, this definitely isn't a compliment).

Brian, no problem with the overall global Y/Y projected growth figure, but the article itself breaks one of my cardinal rules of good journalism - never leave readers in a state of confusion.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--Personal computer unit shipments in the third quarter are expected to grow 24.8% over PC volumes in the same period last year, said market researcher International Data Corp. here today. The strong growth in worldwide PC shipments will come on the heels of a 36% increase in unit volumes in the second quarter compared to a year ago, IDC said.

In that last sentence, the writer is using the Y/Y % change for US shipments Q298/99, "36%", when talking about worldwide PC shipments in the first part of the sentence.

Unit shipments are expected to rise 7.2% in the third quarter from 10.9 million PCs in the second quarter, said the market research firm. In the second quarter last year, PC makers delivered 8.0 million computers, estimated IDC, which credits cheap systems, healthy growth in Asia and the still strong U.S. economy for the continued surge in personal computer shipments.

Again, the fact that since IDC publishes worldwide figures AND U.S. and other market figures, its very important to identify what these numbers actually represent, appears to be lost on the writer. The 10.9 mil. PC's refers to the US last Q. "Healthy growth in Asia" will drive the worldwide figure, not the US figure. Worldwide shipments last Q according to their preliminary estimates were roughly 25.5 million.

IDC's second quarter PC shipment estimates can be found in a PR on thier website.

Good trading,

Tom

A subtlety: Your article doesn't show that PC sales *are* good, it's saying that PC sales *will be* good in the future. And you know what we here on the thread think of predictions by IDC and Dataquest (based on their past performance).

brian, did you read fred's article?

Message 11214301

btw, you do know that your "source," idc, is a running joke on every thread that can count. apparently, you are incapable of counting or else you would know idc is going on about 4 years of overestimating pc anything by a factor of about 2.

doh! they did it again! doh! at least another sucker still believes them! talk about AMAZING! ;-)

citing them is totally in character for you, though. i bet you did it with a straight face!

if you can't read fred's article, let me know. the prose is tough. ;-) i'll paraphrase for you.
