Toy,

Exactly right about the AD vs NDS debate. I think many people are eagerly awaiting the day when we can put both systems through testing. We've already done some preliminary stuff with the beta and it's not even close. Although testing NT 4 vs NT2000 does show some marked improvements :)

I can't see MSFT making directories into a commodity as it may desperately want to. There are many differences between a "service" running on a server and a Directory. Just one easy one to point out, a service on a server can be stopped or started as needed - the directory can't. It's always ON.

Also, I feel there's been a backlash to the commoditizing of the Network OS. Right now I've read several articles on how IMPORTANT performance & reliability are becoming in the e-commerce age. These are 2 issues where NetWare excels past NT in more cases than not. Sure you can get NT to be reliable and fast but the cost of doing so is vastly different than say in a NetWare environment or even Linux/Unix!

It's coming down to the time where MSFT will have to "put it's money where it's marketing is" and deliver the product they have been talking about for some many years. Otherwise the will be looking at a market segment much different than the one(s) they desire.

The power of NDS goes beyond just services (even though it does perform well in this area). Its ability to create and manage relationships is what sets it apart from other Directory products. I don't feel Novell will miss the boat on this battlefield as Noorda had done before. Dr. Schmidt is just a little too sharp for that :)
