No, you don't understand. The controller itself will have to be slightly more flexible to accept the new RDRAM. It can still accept regular 16-bank RDRAM. I think all RDRAM controllers have to be able to accept various RDRAM technologies. For desktop systems, you can mix technologies between each RIMM, I think. I know it gets much tougher for servers, but then again, servers can afford to be less flexible in their mixing.

The only thing I'm worried about is that the old controllers might not be flexible enough to accept fewer-bank RDRAM. And that's something that needs to be addressed by Rambus. I suspect that initially, Rambus told the memory controller designers to be flexible enough to go up in banks, but not down.
