Yes, of course, forces that bring down the market as a whole could rain on the parade. That list of potential overall bummers is familiar to most of us and I try not to rationalize my asset allocation in light of prevailing overall market conditions. Whenever I try to focus on overall market trends, I have found myself making usually the wrong decision. I myself really suck at market timing and I try to focus on what will move an individual company to make my stock investing choices.

Sometimes those factors do apply to virtually every stock, but what to do in an overall prolonged market downturn? Hold cash, with the possibility of inflation eating it away? Short term bonds? Short sell stock? I have done best hunting down quality companies, esp if they have been beat up a bit, and hanging on. I guess I am saying that I do not know if and when the meltdown will get here, and I am betting on continued overall growth.
