Well Dennis, I gotta hand it to you, that was a darn good response. I wish I could say I had the confidence most teachers would handle it as sensitively and effectively as you have.

I'm still not sure I fully understand why you feel it necessary to specifically teach this type of information to my 3rd grader. Especially since so many people feel so strongly about it. I also think the gay community is making a mistake forcing issues like these into young childrens classroom as a means to garner more tolerance toward their lifestyle. I would much prefer they trust the parents to do what is right with regard to teaching these type of moral values to their children. Some of the backlash against gays are probably a reflection of this, "get that stuff out of my kids face" reaction.

I can understand the issue regarding fear of abuse and so forth. But I would have a certain amount of fear if my child was too fat, short, tall, skinny, ugly or a hundred different other things. That doesn't mean I would feel the need for special books and curriculum to ensure other kids don't harm them when they are older. Violence is never acceptable toward any other child in school and kids are routinely taught this.

res- Without the racial slur it is not a hate crime. That is the way the law is written so it is not slanted towards one group or another.

This is interesting, then how does it apply toward homosexuals? And what is the difference between a bunch of guys chasing down a fat person to beat them up and chasing down a black/white person? How about if a group of kids premeditates to beat up the tall kid, the short kid, the one with glasses and on and on?

As I said the "Hate Crime" code word is nothing more than an attempt to paint a liberal politicians as being tough on crime. When all too often they allow real butchering criminals to go free and live in jails of luxury instead of truly punishing them for what they inflict on society. Coming up with a catchy phrase is not going to do anything toward solving the violence in our society. It may not hurt much, and it will probably give a lot of lawyers some decent paychecks because of the confusing language, but that's about it.
