You are correct. The "witches" burned by the half-crazed Puritans, the atrocities in the Tower of London, we could go on ad nauseum. If we can bring the example back to individuals, I still say that a person who believes in an afterlife is more inclined to do the virtuous thing, not because hes afraid of the consequences if he doesn't, but its just the right thing to do. Its second nature. OTOH, a person who believes we don't have souls is more inclined to rip you off, kill you, etc.
