kathyh,
I was using Texas.Net before RR and I liked them just fine. However, there is nothing like downloading 50 MEg service patches in just minutes! I could never go back to a dial-up connection. When I measure my connection speed at Toast.net, it is usually faster than a T-1.

I'm not really up to speed on firewalls either, but the software I use is for novices like us. It lets you turn the firewall off with a click of the mouse if it is interfering with anything. It also blocks banner ads, animated gifs, and offers "cookie control". All of this can be turned on and off from the desktop and is also programmable for individual websites. I've been using it for a couple of weeks and I don't find it to be too intrusive. It seems a fair trade off for the protection against hackers that I hope it's providing. Of course, I'm sure a real hacker could get in anyway - but it probably keeps the kids out! It also speeds up page downloading, since you don't get any of those banners that take forever to download. It also shows you how many ads and cookies it blocks (you wouldn't believe how many ads and cookies that pass through your connection every day!).

I've e-mailed RR and asked for help on the security issues, but they refuse to get involved. I guess if they started trying to help, it might legally obligate them if someone actually hacked your computer.

You are very welcome!!

Dwainster

kathyh,

<<i have heard if you have a firewall, that you can't get into some sites, or post on some sites... not exactly sure even what i am talking about <ggg> but i do hear people discussing this who are posting from work for example...>>

watley will not work behind most business firewalls, that is why i cannot use it at work. If you add your own firewall software you should be able to configure it to allow the abw feed through.

as for speed you can test your current isp at the toastnet site. my old isp was sbc and top speed was 15 - 20 kps, with rr it is between 400 - 500 kps.
