There was once a two-part "Outer Limits" with Robert Culp as a scientist who volunteered to be altered in such a way that he could pass as a space alien. The idea was that creating a scare about interplanetary invasion would unite the world. Finally, he is ready, and he sets off in a "space ship", only to land in a field....Before he can scare much of anyone, he is shot by a farmer, and the experiment turns to dust.....

Perhaps there is a social utility to flying saucers

Don't say that, there are nut groups out there who insist the government is going to stage a phony encounter with a UFO in order to amass more power, declare martial law, seize guns, etc.
