Here's a different slant ( and I know I always get into trouble when I put something like this out ). I haven't looked into the Sun Ray thing deeply. But my reading of the article says that it has no software and really, no OS. All it does is present what the server puts out.

One possibility - to provide an interface between, say, a Microsoft Excel application and the Sun Ray, some user interface is required. Would some development of MetaFrame be the solution to this. The MetaFrame interface would perhaps be located on the server with only presentation data transmission to the Sun Ray.

Just a guess. Might be worth looking into something along this line.

One note about Java. Once compiled to the local system, it runs about as fast as compiled C code (in some cases, it has been tested as faster). The slowest part is usually the large file download to get an app onto the local system.

Just my thoughts. Don't jump on me too hard. Maybe we're seeing a really fundamental shift in how software is distributed.
